Season Premiere Recap
I was fortunate to watch the premiere of ‘Justified’ for one hour, at Justified Episodes.
It is a perfect fit for FX who normally exhibit dramas of deep emotional cores. Elmore Leonard’s short story “Fire in the Hole” is the inspiration for the show. I wonder why FX has not bothered to try making any of his crime fictions into a series so far. I have no doubt that “Maxim Bob” would have done much better in FX than in ABC.
Raylen Givins, a U.S. Marshall based at Miami gets transferred to his native state of Kentucky after he shoots a suspect to death. Before that he had given him a 24 hour notice to leave Dodge. He was not willing to return to his homeland, may be because he had a childhood relationship with a radical Nazi and also with his ex-wife.
Timothy Olyphant acted as the Marshall. He is just what everybody expects of a TV cop in a cooler hat. Unlike Vic Mackey, he is not interested in money or fame. He believes that his one and only aim in life is to correct injustice.
Olyphant presents a picture of a calm and collected character. His attitude helps in exhibiting his deep dramatic moments very well. Apart from being a crime fighter, he is liked by all for his character, which makes everybody eager to find out why he is unwilling to return to his homeland.
Boyd Crowder, enacted by Walter Goggins, is the leader of a local white supremacist gang. They are notorious bank robbers. But to divert their attention from the police, they stage car bombings. His deceased brother’s wife is Ava, acted by Lolle Carter.
Goggins is perfect for the show. He is much shrewder and more mean than Shane Vandrell. He enjoys robbing banks and destroying churches. It is simply a child’s play for him. He acts the role of a true villain with aplomb and the episode reaches its climax.
The episode had all the trimmings for a good hit. The funniest incident happens towards the end, when Raylen catches two of Boyd’s goons who were following him from Ava’s house after a shoot-out. This would match the best piece of entertainment from “Deliverance.” Boyd’s band of dumb henchmen will also make the viewers laugh wholeheartedly.
Raylen’s boss, with Nick Searcy in the role, though a tough police official, is also a good natured, fun loving guy. Though he thinks that Raylen is a threat to his official position, he does not disapprove of him.
The first episode just follows the short story of Leonard. But then on, it has to fend for itself, but for all intents and purposes it has been able stay in the fray.
Why is it that all strange and odd persons are based at Miami? On seeing ‘Justified’, ‘Burn Notice’ and ‘CSI’ it can be concluded that Miami has more crazy persons than any other state.
